There will be individual conferences with the instructor to discuss their progress and interests.

Half of class time will be spent discussing student work and half will be spent discussing syllabus readings.

In this course students will learn to "read like a writer," while grappling with the work of accomplished poets, and providing substantive commentary on peers' work.

Through diverse readings, students will examine craft strategies at work in both formal and free verse poems, such as diction, metaphor, imagery, lineation, metrical patterns, irony, and syntax.

Close reading of poetry texts, poetry writing exercises, and discussion of student’s original poetry in a workshop setting. Students will write original poetry and discuss it in a workshop format. Exploration of narrative technique, dialogue form, and the short story. CW 326 (ART 326)(ENGL 326) BOOK ARTS (3-0-3)(F, S, SU). Study of literary magazines and/or small presses with the intention of preparing students to submit their own work for publication, as well as develop hands-on editorial skills and experience by assisting with The Idaho Review or Ahsahta Press. CW 490 SENIOR PORTFOLIO IN CREATIVE NONFICTION (3-0-3)(F/S)(FF).

An introduction to the origins, evolution, theory, and practice of storytelling. Students will write original creative nonfiction and discuss it in a workshop format. Exploration of poetic technique and the study of how poets read and learn from other poets. CW 303 INTERMEDIATE FICTION WRITING (3-0-3)(F, S, SU). CW 432 LITERARY EDITING AND PUBLISHING (3-0-3)(F/S).Extensive revision of previous written work in creative writing courses and creation of portfolio focused on fiction.Students will also learn about the publishing process and how to apply effectively for graduate programs in creative writing.The central focus of the course will be weekly visits from current radio writers, producers and on-air personalities, including local and national NPR producers, commentators and reporters.An introduction to fiction writing, focusing on the short story.For information about the Academic Calendar, including the dates of first and second quarter courses, please visit the College's calendars page.This course is for students who wish to experiment with three genres of creative writing: short fiction, poetry and drama, and techniques specific to each of them.An intensive study of aspects of craft in either fiction, poetry or creative non-fiction. Students will be introduced to literary disciplines including poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and writing for the stage and screen. CW 233 FUNDAMENTALS OF NARRATIVE (3-0-3)(F, S, SU). Intensive one-on-one study of selected creative writing discipline with faculty mentor. Exploration of genres of creative nonfiction with an emphasis on contemporary writers. CW 302 INTERMEDIATE POETRY WRITING (3-0-3)(F, S, SU). Intensive study of the possibilities of English grammar in the context of creative nonfiction, poetry, and fiction, with particular attention to students’ own writing. An exploration of the writer in society, both as artistic endeavor and profession. CW 301 INTERMEDIATE CREATIVE NONFICTION WRITING (3-0-3)(F, S, SU).
