The Creative Writing program at Southeastern simultaneously challenges students to extend the possibilities of their craft and offers them a safe place to take risks as they develop a body of finished work.
Students must also complete at least 15 hours of coursework in English at the 600 level.
With the approval of the Advisory Committee, students may take a maximum of six graduate hours in a related field. Southeastern's first Writer-in-Residence Modern and Contemporary Drama; Performance Studies, including Ethnographic Performance Practices in Social, Cultural, and Historical Contexts; American Culture and Popular Entertainments; Creative Writing; and Literary Analysis.

Since it was established in 1981, the MFA program at Mc Neese has produced successful writers and poets who continue to publish widely and teach at colleges and universities around the nation as well as receive prestigious awards and fellowships, according to MFA director Amy Fleury, another Mc Neese MFA graduate and herself an award-winning poet."Our students and alumni are extremely gifted and hard-working and their accomplishments are legion.The program focuses strongly on 12 credit hours of Writing Workshop in a declared genre (one workshop, with permission of the department, may be cross-genre), and requires 6 thesis hours in which students work one-on-one with their mentor professors.We also require 18 credit hours of graduate courses in literature.Students may take up to two undergraduate courses for graduate credit with additional requirements assigned by professor and with permission by the department.Applicants who have completed graduate-level English Literature courses may transfer up to 12 credit hours (grades of B or above) with permission of the department.Amy Fleury is the author of Beautiful Trouble (Southern Illinois UP, 2004), which won the Crab Orchard First Book Award and was named a top ten book of 2004 by the Kansas City Star, and the chapbook, Reliquaries of the Lesser Saints (Rope Walk Press, 2010), and Sympathetic Magic (Southern Illinois UP, 2013) .Her poems have appeared in , among other journals and anthologies.We are fortunate in our program to have attracted such talented writers and to make a community in Lake Charles where everyone challenges and supports one another's writing endeavors.We are always looking forward to the next poem, story and novel from these folks.
